A glance at the Rothesay County Championship Division One table might suggest Nottinghamshire are sitting comfortably at the summit. The reality is anything but.
Yes, the defending champions lead the way as the mid-season break ends this morning. Yes, they have already produced some outstanding cricket. And yes, the innings victory over Essex at Chelmsford last time out was a reminder of just how dangerous Haseeb Hameed's side can be when everything clicks.
But beneath the surface lies one of the most congested Division One tables in recent memory. Nottinghamshire's 116 points leave them top of the standings, but Somerset and Warwickshire are only five points behind, while Glamorgan, Sussex and Essex remain within touching distance. Just 11 points separate first from sixth.
