Cricket has a funny way of knocking you back down to earth. After a professional performance against Lancashire on Wednesday, The Blaze suffered a surprise defeat to Yorkshire by 70 runs at Headingley. It wasn’t that everything went against The Blaze.
They pegged Yorkshire well after their top order had accumulated steadily, with Lauren Winfield-Hill top scoring with 90 from 101 balls. It was Jess Jonassen (67) and Sterre Kalis (61) who put some impetus into the innings, while the rest of the order failed to make a significant contribution.
A second wicket partnership of 126 between Marie Kelly and Kathryn Bryce had put The Blaze in a comfortable position in the chase. They were 79 for 1 at the end of the powerplay, and life looked easy until Jonassen was brought into the attack and ripped through The Blaze middle-order.
