Rocking up in 2025 and making the kind of impact that puts you firmly in the eye of Australian selectors probably wasn’t on Fergus O’Neill’s bingo card but that’s just what happened and though he has yet to earn a famous ‘Baggy Green’ Cap, he’ll have one eye on replicating the form for Nottinghamshire in 2026.
The New Zealand born seamer who plies his trade at state side Victoria, made an instant impact in a 4-game spell in the East Midlands last summer, picking up 21 wickets at a paltry 17.9 average, before his stint ended, with the Australian quick only having a 28 day Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) Visa.
With the impact meaningful, O’Neill will be back for a longer stint for both the 2026 and 2027 season with UK Visa rules changing, allowing him to be signed for the first-half of the County Championship campaign, that will see him remain in the East Midlands until June.
Coming back for 2026, O’Neill spoke to the club of his desire to replicate his 2025 form saying “I'm keen to come back and make sure our momentum keeps rolling,"
